Surgery for Lennon
15 Sep 2006 - 08:46:59
Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon will be sidelined until the end of October after boss Martin Jol confirmed the England international needs to have a knee operation.
The former Leeds United star suffered the injury in training last Friday but it had been hoped he would be able to play in the UEFA Cup first round first leg clash against Slavia Prague.
However, although Lennon flew to the Czech Republic, he was still troubled by the injury during training on Wednesday.
Jol told the club's official website: "We were taking a cautious approach with Aaron. However, after training, it was quite clear that he certainly wouldn't be able to play and now that the medics have re-assessed his injury, he will have surgery as soon as possible."
Without Lennon, Spurs still managed to secure an impressive 1-0 win in Prague on Thursday, thanks to Jermaine Jenas' first-half goal.
Jol added: "For us of course the result is the main thing. We wanted to score a goal, it is always important to score and that's what we did reasonably early on.
"I think in the first half we controlled the game, but we lost a bit of initiative in the second half and if you can't be dominant you can give away chances.
"They started believing in themselves and I feel they had one or two shots but it was a scrappy game in the second half.
"It was not easy for us because they played a similar system so everybody played against his own man. I felt that, at times, we could have done a bit better. On the other hand, if you win 1-0 in Slavia, it is a good result."
