Tottenham new boy Steed Malbranque will be out of action for around two months after undergoing surgery on a long-standing hernia problem.
Spurs head coach Martin Jol was aware of the injury before he spent £2million to sign Malbranque from Fulham last week and allowed the midfielder to decide which course of treatment to follow.
Jol said: "It was his decision and he will be out for seven or eight weeks."
Meanwhile, Bulgaria striker Dimitar Berbatov will miss Spurs' trip to Manchester United on Saturday after picking up a groin injury on international duty.
