Spurs win Steed race

Tottenham have won the race to sign French midfielder Steed Malbranque from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old was a target for Bolton, West Ham, Middlesbrough and Newcastle after a contract dispute led to him being banished from Fulham's first-team squad.

However, he eventually settled on a move across London to White Hart Lane and Spurs head coach Martin Jol believes he will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad, even though a groin injury will keep him on the sidelines for around ten weeks.

"Steed is a skilful, versatile midfielder of real quality," Jol told the club's official website.

"He is a player we have always admired and we are delighted he has come to us, there were a number of other clubs interested.

"He is a player who can cover the left, centre and right midfield positions and will work well within our system."

Malbranque joined Fulham from Lyon in a £5million deal in 2001 and went on to score 32 times in 172 Premiership appearances for the Cottagers.
