Spurs target Stalteri

Tottenham are reported to be chasing the signature of Werder Bremen utility player Paul Stalteri who will be available on a free transfer in the summer.

Head coach Martin Jol hopes to sign the Canada international, who is out of contract at the end of the season, to strengthen his defence.

Stalteri can operate on either flank as a midfielder or full-back but Jol sees him primarily as a defender.

The 28-year-old has experienced great success in his eight years in Germany having won the league and cup double last season, and has also collected over 50 international caps for Canada.

Stalteri turned down a move to Crystal Palace last summer in order to concentrate on Bremen's Champions League campaign, but they are unlikely to qualify for next season's competition and he is now prepared to make a move to the Premiership.

Spurs' wide players have struggled for consistency this season, with new signings Noe Pamarot and Thimotee Atouba failing to establish themselves in the side, and Stalteri's versatility would give Jol greater options.
