Spurs snubbed Defoe bid

England striker Jermain Defoe wanted to join Portsmouth on transfer deadline day, according to Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie.

The 23-year-old started just one of Tottenham's first three matches of the campaign and is desperate to play regular Premiership football as he attempts to cement his place in the national team.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol still views him as an important squad member and knocked back a substantial offer from Portsmouth.

Storrie told The Sun: "We put in a bid of £6million for Defoe and it was rejected.

"He wanted to come and that shows we are a club moving in the right direction."
