    Spurs seal Bent deal

    29 Jun 2007 - 08:14:22

Tottenham boss Martin Jol has added to his attacking options by snapping up the England international Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic in a deal believed to be in the region of £16.5million.

The 23-year-old becomes Jol's second major summer signing following the capture of Gareth Bale from Southampton, but places a question mark on Spurs' other strikers.

Bent is expected to provide competition for Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, but the White Hart Lane futures of Mido and Jermain Defoe have now been placed in doubt.

Jol told the club's official website: "Darren's strength is his stamina.

"Normally players will make runs three or four times in 45 minutes, he'll do it all the time and if you manage to play balls behind the defence, he'll be there. That's what I like about him.

"He has pace, he links play well and can see a pass - he can exploit the space and play as well. He knows Spurs is the place to be and that's something to be proud of."

The player himself added: "Tottenham have a lot of young English players and it's a young squad.

"It's a squad going forward and that's the direction I wanted to take. They seem to be getting better and better every season and I would love to be part of that.

"It helps a lot that I know a few of the lads from England internationals and I'm sure they will help me settle in. It's exciting times for me and the club, hopefully I'll show what I can do at Tottenham and we'll go on to win things."

Bent made 77 appearances for the Addicks in his two seasons at The Valley and found the net on 37 occasions following his £2.5million transfer from Ipswich Town.
