Spurs rocked by Modric blow
30 Aug 2009 - 10:52:38
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his leg during Saturday's victory over Birmingham City.
Spurs maintained their 100 per cent start to the new Premier League season with a 2-1 win over the Blues at White Hart Lane, but the victory has been soured by news of the serious injury suffered by the Croatia international.
Modric limped out of the game in the 49th minute following an innocuous looking tangle with Lee Bowyer.
He appeared to have suffered a calf injury but scans have revealed that the 23-year-old playmaker sustained a fracture to his right fibula.
A Tottenham statement read: "X-rays have determined that Luka Modric sustained a fracture to his right fibula during Saturday's victory over Birmingham City at White Hart Lane."
The injury is a blow to Spurs and also Croatia as Modric will now miss the World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley on September 9.
Tottenham also lost Ledley King to injury during the same match and the skipper will now join fellow central defenders Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate on the sidelines.
