Spurs flop Gilberto goes back to Brazil in search of escape route from the Lane

Tottenham full-back Gilberto has returned to Brazil in a bid to end his disastrous spell at White Hart Lane. The 33-year-old has a year left on his contract with the north London club but has been told he can leave for nothing if he finds a club. The former Hertha Berlin player is hoping to interest clubs in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre after giving up on Europe. 'This year was difficult. I have a verbal agreement with Tottenham for them to release me if I find a place to play. They will not create obstacles,' Gilberto told Brazilian website Globoesporte. He has never really recovered from a disastrous debut against PSV in March last year when his blunder cost Spurs a goal and the Dutchmen went on to win the UEFA Cup tie. Gilberto had muscled his way into the Brazil national team before coming to the Barclays Premier League and impressed in their country's Copa America triumph in 2007. But the left-sided player has become increasingly overlooked by coach Dunga and will not play in upcoming World Cup qualifiers or the Confederations Cup in South Africa this summer. Last month he was offered to Fluminense along with Chelsea midfielder Mineiro but no agreement has yet been reached.
