Spurs confirm Defoe swoop

06 Jan 2009 - 10:39:46

Jermain Defoe is on his way back to Tottenham Hotspur after Portsmouth accepted a bid believed to be in the region of £15million for the England striker.

Defoe, 26, left Spurs 12 months ago when he was lured to the south coast club by manager Harry Redknapp with the promise of greater first-team opportunities.

The former West Ham United striker had lost his England place during a frustrating spell down the pecking order at White Hart Lane under former boss Juande Ramos.

But following Redknapp's move in the opposite direction in October, Defoe has continually been linked with a return to the north London club.

On Monday, Redknapp revealed his new club had made a 'good offer' for the striker who has scored 17 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions during his brief spell on the south coast.

The two clubs were reported to be as little as £1.5million apart in their valuation of the player, who Pompey paid just £7.5million to land last January.

However, they have now reached an agreement and Defoe is set to travel back to White Hart Lane for a medical later on Tuesday.

"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Portsmouth for the transfer of Jermain Defoe," confirmed a statement from Spurs.

"Personal terms have been agreed and the striker will today undergo a medical."

Defoe had been expected to leave Fratton Park after admitting over the weekend that he wanted to rejoin both Redknapp and Spurs.

"If Portsmouth can agree an acceptable deal with Tottenham I would like the opportunity to talk to them," he revealed.

"I've enjoyed my time immensely here, but I can't deny that Harry Redknapp's departure as manager hit me hard, particularly because he was the reason why I joined Portsmouth in the first place.

"I have a great deal of respect for Tony Adams and what he's trying to achieve. We have a very good working relationship.

"But I left Tottenham to join Portsmouth with the intention of working with Harry for a considerable time to come.

"I could have gone to other clubs when I left Tottenham, but I wanted to work with Harry."
