Tottenham Hotspur sealed a last-gasp deal for Charlton Athletic's England midfielder Danny Murphy before the January transfer window closed.

The 28-year-old had been out of the Addicks side for nearly a month following reports of a move to Newcastle United or Manchester City, but it was Spurs who nipped in to net the former Liverpool schemer.

White Hart Lane sporting director Damien Comolli told the club's official website: "Danny is an experienced player who is used to playing at the highest level.

"He has a fantastic ability to create chances and we are delighted that we have been able to bring him to the club."

Addicks boss Alan Curbishley had earlier hinted that Murphy was about to leave, having left him out of the goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion.

He said: "I changed the team around after our recent run of bad form and I did not think the way we were now playing would suit him.

"I tried to reassure him that his future was with us, but all the speculation had upset him. It won't be any of my doing if he leaves us."
