Spurs closing in on Cesar

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be close to agreeing a deal to sign Real Zaragoza goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez.

The 36-year-old is set to leave Zaragoza following their relegation from the Spanish top-flight and has become Spurs' top target after they decided not to complete a move for Derby County's Stephen Bywater.

Tottenham head coach, Juande Ramos, has allowed both Paul Robinson and Radek Cerny to leave the club this summer, having recruited PSV Eindhoven's Heurelho Gomes as his new number one.

Cesar's agent, Arturo Canales, told Sky Sports: "The subject is not easy but we are working on a positive solution for all parties.

"The decision is Zaragoza's, but the Premier League is very attractive to the player."

Meanwhile, Spurs are reported to have failed with a major bid for West Ham United's England striker Dean Ashton.

With Robbie Keane having left White Hart Lane this summer and Dimitar Berbatov looking likely to follow him, Spurs head coach Ramos is keen to boost his attacking options.
