Scan gives Keane the all-clear
02 Mar 2010 - 09:12:21
Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane has recovered from a knee injury and could play for the Republic of Ireland in Tuesday's friendly international against Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
Keane, who is currently on loan at Celtic, was forced to drop out of Giovanni Trapattoni's squad on Sunday after aggravating a knee problem during Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Rangers.
However, after having a further medical examination on Monday night, Keane has been given the all-clear to face the Brazilians.
Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy could be handed his first start for his country, with Trapattoni saying: "He can play behind the strikers, sometimes left or sometimes on the right.
"James is a good young player and, in the future, his manager can decide which position is better for him. At the moment, he is still searching for his position.
"In Italy it is the same as Ireland - where there is a young player with big potential, everybody has great expectation.
"Only Pele, (Diego) Maradona and (Johan) Cruyff were stars at 19 - everyone must grow and develop, with personality, slowly, slowly, step by step."
