Redknapp hails landmark season
06 May 2010 - 07:38:44
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp paid tribute to the season-long efforts of his players after Wednesday's 1-0 victory at Manchester City secured a place in next year's Champions League.
Peter Crouch's late goal completed a remarkable turnabout in the fortunes of Spurs, who were battling relegation from the Premier League when Redknapp became manager 18 months ago.
The hard-fought victory at Eastlands edged out City in the race for fourth place in the final Premier League table and afterwards Redknapp was delighted to finally bring Champions League football to White Hart Lane.
Spurs have twice finished fifth and missed out on qualification in recent seasons.
"It's fantastic. It's been a terrific season for us, we've played some great football and we deserve it," said Redknapp.
"I thought maybe the goal wasn't going to come and we'd go to Burnley (on the final day) with the extra point in the bag, which would have been a good situation.
"But this is perfect to finish it here today. It's just perfect for us.
"It's great for the club and it is nice to have finally done it after coming so near in the past."
Meanwhile, chairman Daniel Levy was fulsome in his praise of the landmark achievement.
"For us to be there is really quite something," he enthused. "In the process of considering a new stadium, it's come at the right time."
