Redknapp: We deserved win
17 Aug 2009 - 07:51:58
Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp believes his side were well worth their 2-1 victory over Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto's stunning long-range strike just before half-time and a debut goal for new £8million defender Sebastien Bassong after Steven Gerrard had briefly levelled from the penalty spot secured the points for the home side.
Liverpool were denied two penalty shouts as the match progressed, but a delighted Redknapp claimed his side fully deserved to open their campaign with three points.
"It was deserved," he declared. "Last season we beat them, I'd just arrived and I admitted at the time I didn't quite know how we beat them as they battered us.
"This time we were the better team and we deserved that win. I thought we outplayed them.
"The key was being able to hit back again after they equalised.
"Normally with a team like Liverpool if you go 1-0 up and then they make it 1-1, the momentum shifts and you would fancy them to go on and win.
"But we came back at them again and we had another couple of great efforts that the keeper did well to save."
