Ramos revels in cup victory
25 Sep 2008 - 07:53:17
Tottenham head coach Juande Ramos hopes Wednesday's Carling Cup win over Newcastle United - a first domestic victory of the season - can kick-start his side's dismal start to the new campaign.
Roman Pavlyuchenko opened his account for his new club and Jamie O'Hara also found the net as Spurs started the defence of the trophy with a 2-1 third round success at St James' Park.
"We deserved the win," claimed Ramos. "The first half was more equal and the two teams were at a similar level, but we took the advantage in the second half.
"We scored the two goals and, even though Michael Owen scored right at the end, I don't think you can argue with the overall result.
"You never know what is around the corner. The result does give us peace of mind but we'll have to see what happens in our next game at Portsmouth on Sunday.
"Portsmouth are strong at home, so it will be a test."
Meanwhile, Ramos is hoping Pavlyuchenko's opening goal for the club since his £13.8million arrival will be the first of many strikes from the Russian.
He added: "The fact that he scored his first goal brought him lots of happiness and brought the team the peace of mind to keep playing and playing well.
"It helped the team to achieve what it has achieved tonight."
