Ramos points to Berba exit
09 May 2008 - 07:10:12
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Juande Ramos has all but admitted that star striker Dimitar Berbatov will make a summer exit from White Hart Lane.
Reports on Thursday had suggested that Spurs were keen on a swap deal involving Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and, although Ramos dismissed those reports as speculation, he did admit that Berbatov was likely to leave.
He told reporters: "I understand perfectly well that big clubs want to sign him. I've spoken to him many times and know exactly what he wants.
"I would obviously like him to stay here, but we don't know how future negotiations will go, so it is something I cannot guarantee.
"Obviously we have to cover our backs in case the player decides to leave and we have to have options to replace him.
"If there are offers coming in for the player we will see if they convince the club and the player as well. At this stage of the season you never know what is going to happen.
"What we want is for the player to be happy and enjoy his football. I'm indifferent if he went to one team or another team, the only thing I can tell you now is that he is a Tottenham Hotspur player.
"We are perfectly calm about it. We are not going to make a decision until there is an offer on the table that the club would be interested in."
Twenty-seven-year-old Bulgaria international Berbatov has scored 46 goals in two seasons with Spurs.
