Poyet fearful of Keane exit
06 Jul 2008 - 11:46:58
Tottenham Hotspur's assistant manager Gus Poyet has admitted that his club cannot afford to lose captain Robbie Keane, who is a reported transfer target for Liverpool.
Republic of Ireland ace Keane is rumoured to be high on Reds boss Rafa Benitez's wish-list, but Poyet insists that Spurs have to fend off any interest in their skipper.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: "I was shocked when I heard him being linked with Liverpool, he's a very important player for us.
"We can't afford to let Robbie go. We have lost Jermain Defoe, but hopefully Dimitar Berbatov will stay. If we lost Robbie it would be too much."
Keane, 28, moved to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2002 for £7million from Leeds United and has scored 107 goals in 254 appearances for the north London club.
Meanwhile, Spurs have been linked with a double swoop on Spanish club Valencia.
Right-winger Joaquin and holding midfielder David Albelda are both rumoured to be interesting Spurs head coach Juande Ramos, who was recently thwarted in his efforts to land Sevilla wing-back Diego Capel.
