Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is planning to steer clear of controversy in the future after being stunned by the reaction to him biting Javier Mascherano.

The England international has been the subject of a torrent of criticism since his clash with the West Ham midfielder last weekend, even though the incident earned him only a yellow card.

Defoe has not enjoyed his week in the media spotlight and is desperate to avoid hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons again.

The 24-year-old said: "I didn't do much and it was heat of the moment. I need to move forward, it definitely won't happen again and it was out of character.

"I don't know how many bookings I got last season or the season before but I don't usually get involved like that.

"I just want to play football and score goals, everybody knows that.

"I am a professional person and when I get on the pitch I just want to win every game.

"I've got to move on as it is an important time for us."
