Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy is determined to win a regular place in Martin Jol's first-team starting line-up after struggling to establish himself at White Hart Lane.

The former Liverpool star has started only four games for Spurs since his move from Charlton Athletic in January but was one of the few bright spots for Jol's side in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea.

"It's always nice to play reasonably well because I'm trying to establish myself in the team but I'd rather have an average performance and get a result because at the moment we need one," said the former England international.

"Of course it's unfortunate we've had injuries which may have given me my opportunity but that's football and now I have to take it.

"I'm trying to show the gaffer that I'm worthy of a regular place.

"It's a bit naive to think you can play every single game because of the amount of games and the amount of players we have in our squad but I'm really enjoying it."
