    Let-off for Defoe

    24 Oct 2006 - 08:33:33

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe will not face any further disciplinary action despite appearing to bite West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Defoe picked up a yellow card after reacting angrily to a challenge from behind by the Argentinian during Spurs' 1-0 win at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Television replays showed the England striker had bitten Mascherano on the arm, but the Football Association is unable to proceed with a misconduct charge because referee Steve Bennett cautioned him at the time.

Defoe's agent, Sky Andrew, was relieved to hear that his client would not face punishment for an incident he feels has been exaggerated.

Andrew told BBC Radio Five Live: "Jermain says he did not bite anyone. He's a very passionate boy about his football. It was a tough game and an intense environment but he says he did not bite him.

"Jermain regrets the way he did retaliate and accepts he should not have retaliated at all, but it has been blown up out of all proportion."
