Kranjcar: I'm no Modric sub

New signing Niko Kranjcar has warned Tottenham Hotspur that he will not be happy just to deputise for injured compatriot Luka Modric.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp raided former club Portsmouth to sign the Croatia international midfielder on transfer deadline day.

It has been suggested that Redknapp was forced into the transfer market after seeing fellow Croatian Modric ruled out for a number of weeks with a broken leg.

But Kranjcar insists he has moved to White Hart Lane in order to play first-team football every week.

"I don't feel like a sub for Modric," he said.

"I came to play alongside him in the first team. We've proved we can play together in the Croatia team."

Meanwhile, Kranjcar has revealed he jumped at the chance to leave Portsmouth after becoming disillusioned with life at Fratton Park.

"I'm not sorry to leave," he said after ending his three-year stay on the south coast.

"They've sold almost everyone due to the financial situation."
