Knee surgery sidelines Bale

Tottenham have confirmed that Gareth Bale has been forced to undergo surgery to his left knee.

The 19-year-old former Southampton defender is expected to be sidelined with the injury until the end of July.

Bale was forced to drop out of the Wales squad earlier this week as John Toshack's team prepare for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku.

He has featured in 42 matches for Spurs in his two seasons at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, Robbie Keane was forced to sit out training with the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday as Giovanni Trapattoni's side prepare for the crucial World Cup qualifying clash against Bulgaria.

However, Trapattoni insists it is only a minor problem, saying: "It was just as a precaution.

"He has some inflammation under his foot. It's nothing serious and he will be fine for Saturday."
