Jol rues Berbatov injury
25 Jan 2007 - 08:15:38
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Martin Jol admitted that the early loss to injury of striker Dimitar Berbatov was a crucial factor in his side's failure to beat Arsenal in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final.
Berbatov scored the opening goal in the 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane, but limped off with a groin problem just 18 minutes in and although Spurs were soon two goals ahead, the Gunners came storming back to draw level.
Jol said afterwards: "We've only got ourselves to blame.
"The first 25 minutes we were outstanding and that had a lot to do with Berbatov.
"We knew we had to score a third, but we didn't, dropped off and were tired. They looked sharp and took control of the game with five or six fresh players.
"We tried to keep the ball but we gave it away and they kept on coming back.
"But there is still a final at stake. We will approach it like that, but it's certainly disappointing because we were two goals up."
