Jol looks on the bright side
13 Apr 2007 - 07:28:15
Tottenham boss Martin Jol believes his side will learn from their UEFA Cup exit at the hands of Sevilla and return a stronger force next season.
Spurs battled back from conceding two goals inside the first ten minutes to hold the highly-rated Spanish side to a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane on Thursday night to exit the competition 4-3 on aggregate.
Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon were on the mark in quick succession and Jol believes the match-up with the reigning UEFA Cup holders will stand his side in good stead for future challenges.
"We played in all the cups and I feel it was an exciting year for us," said the Dutchman.
"If we can do the same next year we will have had a good year.
"We have to learn, we have a new team with exciting players but we have to defend as well.
"We said at half time we had to go out with pride and we did that, we won the second half 2-0.
"They were the team of the year last year, but I still feel we would've had a bigger chance if we don't give away goals like we did for the first one at White Hart Lane.
"The only thing now is to pick ourselves for the league because we are in a fine position."
Spurs are currently seventh in the Premiership table and not yet assured of a UEFA Cup place for next season.
