Jol hints at Defoe sale
25 Aug 2007 - 12:29:39
Tottenham boss Martin Jol has hinted Jermain Defoe could be sold if he continues to drag his heels over signing a new contract.
The England striker has less than two years remaining on his existing deal but is believed to be seeking assurances over his long-term future after falling down the pecking order in recent months.
The 24-year-old is currently fourth choice behind Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Darren Bent at White Hart Lane and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal that has been on the table for some time.
Defoe has played less than an hour's football this season after being restricted to just three substitute appearances.
"He tells everyone he loves the club but hasn't signed a contract," revealed Jol, who fears losing the striker on a free transfer like former club captain Sol Campbell who moved to rivals Arsenal six years ago after letting his contract run down.
"The chairman said to me that he doesn't want another Campbell on his hands.
"I said to him he will have a fair chance if he signs. My only problem with him is his contract.
"He is the only player who doesn't want to extend his contract. Everyone else is committed, I'm committed, but he doesn't even want to discuss it.
"I have no doubts about him. He is the best finisher around the box in England but Berbatov is probably the most skilful player in England and Robbie Keane is scoring goals and is skipper now and important to the team mentally."
