    Home best for Huddlestone

    02 Nov 2006 - 10:55:39

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tom Huddlestone is pleased to see the White Hart Lane club focusing on trying to bring on a number of promising homegrown players rather than shopping abroad.

Huddlestone is one of a number of young English players in the Spurs squad, with Paul Robinson, Ledley King, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe all current internationals.

Nineteen-year-old Huddlestone, who joined Spurs from Derby County, said: "It was one of the main reasons for signing.

"It's an encouraging thing and does give everyone a boost within the club who is British.

"It could be classed as a statement, but England is one of the only nations where their players play within their own country. A lot of foreign countries have players playing abroad. So it bodes well for the country."

Spurs head coach Martin Jol is also confident that the club are following the right path, adding: "I would always prefer British or British-based players. They know the British game, they have the culture and the mentality.

"You play so many games here that you have to have the right mentality, and the other players will get the same mentality if they see that, and that is why I prefer British players."
