Holders Tottenham Hotspur face a tough trip to Newcastle United in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Spurs won the competition last season with a 2-1 extra-time win over Chelsea, who must travel to Fratton Park to take on FA Cup holders Portsmouth.

Crewe Alexandra's reward for reaching round three by beating Bristol City 2-1 in the second round is a trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
