HATCHET MAN: Bentley to clock up more miles after running out of time at Spurs
Published : 18 May 2009 11:46:52
David Bentley arrived at Tottenham as the man to replace David Beckham for England. He is leaving as a flop who is heading for his fourth club before his 25th birthday and has to content himself with watching the national team on the telly. Bentley proved at Blackburn he is a decent player, but he has never been given much of a chance to prove that at Spurs. He has started 20 Premier League games this season and for many of them he was playing out of position. Time is something few are given at White Hart Lane and unless that changes they can forget about grandiose ambitions for the Champions League. Roman Pavlyuchenko seems to have suffered from similarly fickle fortune as the transfer business under the previous regime has unravelled under Harry Redknapp. If they both depart at least six transactions from last summer will soon have been reversed. Giovani dos Santos is looking for new playing opportunities, Robbie Keane (Liverpool) and Pascal Chimbonda (Sunderland) have been bought back and Sanchez Cesar left after a few anonymous months in January. Fraizer Campbell's loan deal has hardly been a roaring success either and players from shortly before he came, such as the £9million Alan Hutton, must be ripe for moving on. Bentley and Pavlyuchenko cost a combined total of nearly £29m but will leave for considerably less as the amazing player turnover - 27 transfers in and out since last July - at Tottenham continues.
