Gomes impressing for Spurs
04 May 2009 - 10:19:06
Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has praised goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes for his excellent recent form for the White Hart Lane club.
The 28-year-old Brazilian struggled in his first few months with Spurs, having moved to England from PSV Eindhoven last summer.
However, more recently the South American has helped his side mount a late push for European football and has kept former Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini rooted to the bench.
Redknapp said after the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion: "He's number one, obviously, because I'm picking him.
"Carlo came in and did well but he's been unlucky because this fella has been in great form.
"A lot of the credit for that goes to Tony Parks and a lot of it goes to Carlo for coming here.
"He's not happy with the situation, but Gomes knows he has to play well now to keep his place because the goalkeeper behind him is terrific.
"No disrespect to the previous goalkeepers coach (Hans Leiter), I brought Tony in and he's got into his head and they work well, he's done great with him."
