Gomes enjoys Spurs bond

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes believes he has won over the fans following a disastrous start to his White Hart Lane career.

The Brazil keeper made a string of high-profile gaffes following his £7.8million arrival from PSV Eindhoven last summer but improved as the season progressed.

Gomes held off the challenge of January signing Carlo Cudicini and looks set to begin the new season in possession of the number one jersey.

"I think here at Spurs I have an identification with the supporters that is very good for me. I do feel they respect me," he said.

"I always thought, even at the start of last season - and then regardless of whether I played well or not - that they were behind me and that's very, very important.

"Football is not about managers and players, it is about the fans. They are the ones who work hard, pay the money to watch us play, and support their club through thick and thin.

"So here for me at Spurs, I've always felt that I have had some kind of special relationship with supporters to that is very important."
