Gareth Bale and the Champions League conundrum
Gareth Bale is a special talent and is well deserving of the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards. Yes, there are those that say Robin Van Persie or Luis Suarez should have won the PFA award and you would have a good case.
This is one of those times where several players deserve it and only one is chosen.
With his new awards firmly planted on his mantle at home, where does Bale go from here? Tottenham did themselves no favours by drawing with Wigan over the weekend. With only four matches to go, every point counts towards a Champions League position.
Chelsea and Arsenal are both in good position and Tottenham will need one of them to slip up in order to get a chance at one of the four spots. Spurs can also create their own luck on 8 May when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.
Bale is enjoying his time at Spurs; it is evident every time he steps on the pitch. It is also said that he has a great relationship with André Villas-Boas. AVB has already said that Bale is not for sale but we know from the past that any player is for sale; that is if the price is right.
There are only a few teams that can come up with the kind of money that Spurs will demand and most of them already have a Champions League place reserved.
If Spurs are able to wrestle one of the Champions League spots away, then there is no need for Bale to go anywhere. If they don’t, Spurs fans should not be surprised if Bale exits in search of greater glory. The only way to achieve such glory is to lead your country in the World Cup, the Euro’s or in the Champions League. It doesn’t take a huge football fan to realize where he can reach these heights.
