FA charge Spurs and Boro
06 Dec 2006 - 17:02:45
Tottenham and Middlesbrough have been hit with an FA charge of failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion after a brawl marred Spurs' 2-1 victory over the Teessiders on Tuesday night.
Middlesbrough's George Boateng and Tottenham's Didier Zokora were dismissed for their part in an 86th minute fracas which started after Aaron Lennon and the Boro midfielder clashed at White Hart Lane.
Boro have launched an appeal to have Boateng's red card rescinded, but both clubs now face a trip to FA headquarters to defend the actions of their players.
After the match both Spurs boss Martin Jol and his Boro counterpart Gareth Southgate defended the actions of their respective players.
Jol leaped to the defence of his Ivory Coast midfielder, saying: "The only thing I can say is that my players know never start a fight because they are disciplined. Zokora wanted to prevent a fight."
Meanwhile, Southgate said after the match: "I've seen it (the fight) on the replay. The only problem George Boateng has is that he raises his hands to protect himself, so we'll ask the referee to look at it."
