England start thrills Jenas
07 Feb 2008 - 07:49:20
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes his surprise England start against Switzerland was the result of his impressive club form this season.
Jenas was handed a place in the starting line-up by new coach Fabio Capello and responded with the opening goal in a 2-1 success at Wembley.
The 24-year-old has caught Capello's eye with a string of impressive displays at the heart of the Spurs midfield this season.
Jenas has found the net fives times and was delighted to open his England account on his 18th international appearance.
"It's my first goal at Wembley and first goal for the England first team so I'm delighted," he said
"Obviously my form has been good at club level, but it's fantastic to get a chance at international level.
"You're always surprised (to be picked) when you're not a regular in the team.
"We've had a very intense three days and we were out there putting it into practice today.
"The win creates that winning mentality. As long as we can keep that moving forward, I'm sure we'll be fine.''
