England boss Capello will call on Spurs defender King if injuries bite

Ledley King will be left out of the England squad named this evening for the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra - unless there are injuries during this afternoon's final round of Premier League matches. It had been thought that England coach Fabio Capello was ready to call up King after putting his differences with Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp behind him. Redknapp had criticised Capello when King was originally selected for a match against Slovakia in March and then forced to withdraw. Since then, peace has broken out between the managers and Redknapp said on Friday: 'If King is fit he is up there with the best of them. But if they pick him, he can only play one of the games, he cannot play in two. He can't recover in four days.' Capello has struck a deal with Spurs whereby King will only be called up today if he is really needed. That means Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott will have their selections confirmed for the centre-back places if they come through the final league matches unscathed. Former captain David Beckham, with a record 110 caps for an outfield player, is in line for another call-up following injuries to Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Beckham is slightly short of match fitness after ankle trouble, having sat out last week's AC Milan match at Udinese through suspension. However, the ban gave his ankle a chance to heal sufficiently for him to play against Roma tonight, a game that could secure Champions League qualification for his club.
