Defoe still striving to impress
Jermain Defoe celebrated his 50th England cap with a goal in the win over Moldova but insists every player has to continually prove themselves. The Tottenham striker netted the third goal in the World Cup qualifier in Chisinau to follow on from his friendly winner against Italy in Bern last month. Frank Lampard (two), James Milner and Leighton Baines were also on target as England launched their bid to reach the 2014 finals in Brazil in style. Defoe, starting his first competitive international for two years, said: "It was good to get a start, a 50th cap, a goal, a good win. It was a great night for me. "It was important to win the game and to be patient but the early goal helped. To get a goal as well was fantastic. "I've got two in two but I think everyone has got to keep proving themselves to be honest - not just me. "I'm sure all the lads would say that as well." Lampard reached the 25-goal mark for England and was pleased to show his midfield partnership with skipper Steven Gerrard can still flourish. The 34-year-old Chelsea man's second goal was set up by fine play from Liverpool pair Gerrard and Glen Johnson. Lampard said: "It was nice for myself and Stevie to combine for the second goal. You've got to keep giving them [the doubters] answers. "It was a good ball. But then Stevie is always a pleasure to play with because he is a top player. "It was also great to be back involved in a competitive game after missing the European Championships through injury." Lampard added: "These are tricky places to come and the early goal always helps you to settle your nerves and after that our first-half performance in particular was sharp. "It was full of young pace and won us the game comfortably. We trained very hard and with an attacking mindset. "We are looking to get the ball into our pacy players on the wings or behind the front men. "Defoe is looking very sharp at the minute. We will try to keep playing with that positive attitude and stay as tight at the back as well."
