Defoe says sorry to Gordon
19 Nov 2009 - 11:07:33
Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has apologised to Craig Gordon for the tackle that has led to the Sunderland goalkeeper being sidelined until February.
During Spurs' 2-0 victory against the Black Cats earlier this month, Scotland international Gordon fractured his arm after being caught by Defoe.
Gordon has already expressed his anger with Defoe, saying it was an avoidable injury, but the England international says it was not deliberate.
"It was a funny one, the ball got played through and I thought I could get a toe in - but there was no intention to hurt him," he told Sky Sports News.
"So I talked to Darren Bent, to text him and apologise and I did that. I think he's out for a couple of months so, if he's watching, I'm sorry, he knows that isn't my game."
Gordon had to be replaced midway through the second half having been injured as he dived at Defoe's feet to snuff out a chance for the home side.
After being told he would be sidelined for three months, Gordon said: "I thought at the time it was a poor challenge. After looking at it again I haven't changed my mind.
"It's always dangerous diving down at strikers' feet, but I feel Jermain might have done more to avoid the collision."
