Defoe pledges Spurs stay
05 Jul 2007 - 10:51:10
Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has signalled his intention to remain at White Hart Lane and fight for a starting spot, despite rumours of a move away from the north London club.
The 24-year-old England international faces stiff competition for a place in the first team due to the presence of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, as well as the recent £16.5million arrival of Charlton's Darren Bent.
However, amid talk of interest from a number of other Premier League clubs, Defoe says he is prepared for the battle ahead.
He said: "I'm really excited about the new season and the prospect of another campaign in Europe.
"We have made some good signings and our squad is now stronger and even better equipped to compete in all competitions.
"We have competition for places in all positions and that can only be good for the team."
Defoe has been with Spurs since February 2004, scoring 56 times in 146 appearances in all competitions.
