Defoe hints at new contract

England striker Jermain Defoe has suggested he is ready to sign a new contract after claiming he wants to stay at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old scored the winner in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Manchester City but, as has been the case for most of the season, started the match on the bench.

Defoe has continually been linked with a White Hart Lane exit after struggling to earn a starting place and has so far resisted overtures to sign a new contract.

However, the former West Ham United hitman now seems ready to put pen to paper on a new deal with the north London club.

"I think if you look at any player in the world if you're playing, then you would sit down and think I would want to commit myself to the club," Defoe told Sky Sports News.

"A lot of people have said things about contracts and stuff, but if I am totally honest, if I did not want to be at this club, then I wouldn't be here - simple as that.

"I want to stay at the club. Like I keep saying the fans have been fantastic towards me.

"I love the fans and I love the club. I feel at home here and I said that when I signed. I definitely want to stay.

"The fans are fantastic and I truly believe we can really do something special with this team so why would I want to move on?"
