Dawson tips Gomes to shine

Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has backed goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes to win over his doubters during his second season on England.

The Brazil international was ridiculed in the opening weeks of last season when he made a number of high-profile gaffes in a struggling side.

Gomes was expected to be on his way out of White Hart Lane following Harry Redknapp's arrival as manager midway through the season, but the £8million former PSV Eindhoven keeper now looks set to start the new season as Spurs' number one.

"Gomes was unbelievable towards the end of the season," Dawson told the club's official website.

"We weren't doing enough as a team to win football matches at the start of the season, but Gomes made a couple of mistakes and was unfortunately placed in the spotlight.

"He's a big character who played through injuries when it might have been easier for him to just chuck it in.

"In the end he came out on top and showed everyone what a great goalkeeper he is."
