    Contrite Bent issues apology

    31 Jul 2009 - 17:41:50

Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has issued an apology following the Twitter row that erupted on Thursday.

The former Charlton Athletic star criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on his social networking site for allegedly holding up his proposed transfer to Sunderland.

However, in a statement on Spurs' official website, Bent said: "I appreciate that transfers are seldom straightforward and are often complex.

"However, after a long period of waiting following my withdrawal from the plane to China, I had become incredibly frustrated by the time these things take and I posted inappropriate comments on my Twitter site."

The 25-year-old England international had earlier said on his Twitter page: "Seriously getting peed off now. Why can't anything be simple? Sunderland are not the problem in the slightest.

"Do I wanna go Hull City? NO. Do I wanna go Stoke? NO. Do I wanna go Sunderland YES."

The comments then went on, in no uncertain terms, to urge Levy to put the finishing touches to the deal to allow Bent to head to the Stadium of Light.

The striker moved to White Hart Lane for £16.5million from Charlton two years ago and has since scored 25 goals in 79 appearances for Spurs.
