Christian Eriksen is the bargain of the summer
Tottenham Hotspur have acquired the services of Christian Eriksen for a meagre fee of 11.5 million pounds. Eriksen is one of the world’s top young players and many believed a Premier league club would have to break the bank to sign the talented 21-year-old. Gareth Bale’s world record transfer has been confirmed today and has enabled Spurs to spend a whopping £108m on seven new summer signings.
Edgar Davids is convinced that Eriksen will adapt to the English league quickly and is sure that if Andre Villas-Boas plays him in the number 10 role he will thrive at Tottenham this season. The Danish international turned down a move to Manchester City in 2011 as he felt he wouldn’t get regular first team football. Considering he is only 21, the starlet is level headed and always looks to do what is best for his career. He even had trials as a kid with AC Milan, Chelsea and Barcelona but chose Ajax as they have a fantastic record of developing players.
Having lost Bale who contributed 21 goals and nine assists in the league last season, it was clear that Tottenham needed to sign a midfielder with a touch of quality and flair. Villas-Boas clearly sees this in Eriksen who has already been compared to Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart and even the great Michael Laudrup. Eriksen enjoyed a fantastic season with Ajax last year helping them lift the title contributing with ten goals and 17 assists in his 33 league appearances. He started in every league game apart from the opening game of the season against AZ Alkmaar.
Eriksen will offer Tottenham a very versatile player who can be deployed anywhere across the midfield. He possesses acceleration, is a quality passer and works well off the ball and at just £11million will not have unrealistic expectations sprung upon him early at Spurs. Personally, I feel once Tottenham are given time to gel and get used to the new transition of players, Eriksen will show his quality in the Premier league and become a valuable asset to Spurs and Daniel Levy.
