Calf blow sidelines Robinson
18 Oct 2007 - 17:12:51
Under-fire England goalkeeper Paul Robinson will play no part in Totteham Hotspur's next match after returning from international duty with a calf strain.
Robinson was criticised for failing to deal with the initial shot which led to Russia's winner during Wednesday's disastrous 2-1 Euro 2008 qualifying defeat in Moscow.
The 28-year-old keeper palmed Alexey Berezutsky's angled shot into the path of Roman Pavluychenko who prodded home the winner.
But on his return to Tottenham, Robinson was sent for a scan which revealed a grade one calf strain and he will now miss Monday night's Premier League meeting with Newcastle United.
"Paul was assessed this afternoon and it showed that he had picked up a calf strain while on England duty that will prevent him playing for us on Monday," manager Martin Jol told the club's official website.
Robinson's form for club and country has come under fire during a difficult past 12 months for the former Leeds keeper.
However, speaking after a 2-2 draw with Liverpool earlier in the month, Jol vowed to stand by his under-fire number one.
"I am not concerned about Paul Robinson's form and suggestions he made another mistake," said the Dutchman.
"I have no worries about Paul. Every game is different. He has confidence and that is why I played him in midweek against Famagusta and at Anfield."
