Berbatov tipped to stay
30 Dec 2007 - 15:26:12
In-form Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov looks set to be staying at White Hart Lane after chairman Daniel Levy confirmed that he did not anticipate any changes to the current squad in January.
The Bulgaria international had been linked with a White Hart Lane exit in the summer and, after making a slow start to the current campaign, rumours resurfaced suggesting he would be sold at the start of 2008.
However, the 26-year-old has struck a rich vein of form, and his four goals in the 6-4 win against Reading brought his recent tally to eight in nine matches.
In a statement on Spurs' official website, Levy said: "Juande (Ramos), (sporting director) Damien (Comoli) and I have reviewed the squad, and Juande feels that we are not looking at any major changes.
"We are all clear that the January window is the worst time to buy quality players so we shall not be doing any business that is not essential.
"Once again for the record, we are not a selling club, rather we are building for the future. When we have players on long contracts we have no need to entertain offers."
Ramos had earlier said of Berbatov: "He is a very valuable player for us. But I cannot assure you that he is going to stay at the club because the chairman has to decide that.
"The chairman knows I want Berbatov to stay. If it was up to me we would not lose him, but there are different circumstances and factors that we have to take into account such as the player's opinion and feelings."
