Berbatov earns his Spurs

Tottenham manager Martin Jol has backed Dimitar Berbatov to take his European form into the Premiership after firing the London club into the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.

The Bulgaria international striker scored the winner against former club Bayer Leverkusen and earned a standing ovation from both sets of supporters when he was replaced ten minutes from time in the 1-0 victory at the BayArena.

On the domestic front, the 25-year-old has netted only once since his £10million arrival in the summer, but Jol is confident the goals will come sooner rather than later.

He said: "It's a matter of time. Every time we play in Europe he is outstanding.

"In the league he's not as good yet but he has all the talent. We are pretty confident he will be the same player he was in Germany for his last two or three seasons over here.

"He could have scored a bit more and in a couple of situations he was selfish in front of goal, it was a night for four or five goals."
