Berbatov cools United link
27 Aug 2007 - 16:27:08
Tottenham Hotspur's star striker Dimitar Berbatov has played down talk of a transfer to Manchester United in the near future.
The 26-year-old Bulgaria international was a major hit at White Hart Lane last season following his £10.9million arrival from Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 23 goals in 49 appearances.
However, his future in north London has been called into question throughout the summer, amid rumours of strong interest from Premier League champions United.
Berbatov told Bulgarian magazine Futbol: "I think this is unlikely for two reasons.
"Firstly, no-one from United has talked to either me or my agent and, secondly, my club hasn't received any official transfer request. So I think there is nothing to discuss on this subject.
"I chose Tottenham and I stay at Tottenham. I alone chose to play at Tottenham last season and I remain in Tottenham on my own bidding, at least for now, while my contract is in force.
"No-one said that United are not interested in me at all or in the price they need to pay for me, but what is known is that there won't be any transfer this autumn."
Under-fire Spurs head coach Martin Jol had earlier stated: "I said on Friday that I would rather die than sell Berbatov.
"Hopefully I won't die. I am 100 per cent convinced he will stay at the club."
