Bassong ban boost for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have been given the all-clear to hand new signing Sebastien Bassong his debut on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Bassong has joined Spurs from Newcastle United this month but was expected to miss the opening two games of the new season through suspension.

The defender was sent off in the penultimate game of last season for the Magpies and would have missed two Championship games this term had he stayed at St James' Park.

However, Spurs have now revealed that his move south has helped Bassong escape his suspension and he will now be available for selection for Sunday's league opener against Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

"Sebastien Bassong will be available for selection for our Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Sunday," read a club statement.

"Given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle games and was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Brom on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday."
