50 Rising Stars to watch in the Premier League: No 8 Giovani Dos Santos
Football.co.uk's latest countdown continues with a look at a former Barcelona prodigy still finding his feet in the Premier League.
Name: Giovani Dos Santos Ramirez
Born: 11 May 1989 (Age 21)
International Honours: Mexico (33 caps, 5 goals)
Originally born in Monterrey, Mexico, Dos Santos moved to Spain to follow in his father's footsteps of becoming a professional footballer.
He joined Barcelona's prolific youth academy at the age of 13, going on to represent both their youth sides and B team before making the step up to senior level in 2006.
His competitive debut was delayed for another season, eventually coming in a 3-1 La Liga win over Athletic Bilbao on September 2nd 2007.
Dos Santos made 28 appearances in all competitions during 2007-08, scoring a hat-trick in Barca's last game of the season against Murcia.
Despite his impressive end to the season and the amount of first-team action he had been afforded, the tricky midfielder was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £4.7 million, possibly rising to £8.6m, during the summer of 2008.
He started his Spurs career well, with three goals in pre-season, but soon fell out of first-team reckoning. The Mexican was then sent on loan to Championship side Ipswich Town, where he bagged four goals in just eight games.
After returning to North London for the 2009-10 season, Dos Santos was again resigned to the bench and reserve team. He eventually secured a loan move to Galatasaray in January of this year, going on to make 14 appearances for the Turkish club.
Since linking back up with Harry Redknapp's side this season, Giovani has seen more regular senior action, starting the club's vital Champions League qualifier against Young Boys in August.
On the international stage Dos Santos has already accumulated 33 senior caps for Mexico since making his debut in 2007. At this summer's World Cup in South Africa, his impressive performances saw him nominated for the Young Player of the Tournament award.
