Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have agreed a deal to sign Croatia midfielder Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb.
The 22-year-old was a star performer in the side which qualified for the European championship finals at the expense of England, sparking interest from a number of top clubs across Europe.
A brief statement on the Spurs' official website read: "The club is delighted to announce that it has reached agreement with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of midfielder Luka Modric.
"Personal terms have been agreed with the player and he will now undertake a medical and apply for a work permit."
Modric had previously been linked with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus and Newcastle United and had been reported to have been on Tyneside earlier this week.
Magpies boss Kevin Keegan had spoken of his admiration for Modric, saying: "If you had a list of the midfield players around Europe who Newcastle could possibly attract, Luka Modric would be one of them.
"I think he would be pretty much on everyone else's list as well, because he is a fantastic prospect.
"If you look at the midfield players who have a fantastic future, he would be one of them. But every other club in the league would like Modric."
