Woodgate undergoes surgery

Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has undergone minor surgery on a groin problem. Woodgate has been struggling with the injury for some time and has not been able to play in any of Spurs' pre-season friendlies. He visited a specialist in America earlier in the summer but it had been hoped an operation would not be necessary. However, the decision was finally taken for Woodgate to go under the knife and he will now begin a rehabilitation programme with club physios. It is unclear when Woodgate might be fit to return to action but Spurs will be hoping he makes a swift recovery. Fellow centre-back Michael Dawson has an Achilles problem, while Ledley King is unable to play twice in a week due to his troublesome knee. Harry Redknapp has brought in Sebastien Bassong from Newcastle and he will be available for the opening game of the Premier League season against Liverpool on Sunday.
