Wigan are poised to pull off a transfer coup with the £4million signing of Sporting Gijon defender Roberto Canella and will follow it up with a £500,000 bid for Celtic's Gary Caldwell.[LNB]Manager Roberto Martinez is keen to bolster his creaking defence after heavy losses to Tottenham and Manchester United. He sees Caldwell's experience as vital and hopes to persuade him that Wigan are a better option than Championship football with Middlesbrough, who are also interested in the defender.[LNB] Target: Canella (front)[LNB]Left back Canella, 21, has been prominent in La Liga for Gijon and is tipped to become a full international after being capped at all other levels by Spain.[LNB]The signing would also give the green light for Sunderland to make their move for Wigan's £6m-rated defender Maynor Figueroa. [LNB] Moving north: Figueroa (left)[LNB]Although Wigan are reluctant to sell in January they know Sunderland are interested in the left back. [LNB]Steve Bruce has cooled his interest in Tottenham pair Alan Hutton and David Bentley, with cost believed to be the main sticking point.[LNB] JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW 2010: All moves at every Premier League clubSunderland in pole position to sign Wigan defender Maynor FigueroaWIGAN ATHLETIC FC
